Summer Baseball Descriptions
District Baseball
Members of the District teams, which consist of 13 to 15 players each, represent Winchester in competition with other towns who are part of Eastern Massachusetts Cal Ripken District 1. There are no guaranteed minimum playing requirements for players on this team. Inclusion in the District team requires 100% commitment to all practices and games. Practices will begin immediately following the regular spring season. District tournaments begin in late June or early July, and last roughly one week. If the team wins its District, it will move on to the Eastern Massachusetts State Tournament in mid-July. Players must be registered to try out for District teams. A player's inablity to attend the try-out may be excused by the VP of Baseball 12 and Under provided it is arranged in advance.
Bay State Baseball
Typically the District Team doubles as the Bay State Team. However, a player may choose to play in Districts, but not Bay State, and vice versa. Bay State Baseball is "travel" baseball, including towns from ranging geographically from Ashland to Marblehead. 11 and 12 year-old teams play every Tuesday and Thursday and most Saturdays and Sundays. 9 and 10 year-old teams play every Monday and Wednesday, many Saturdays and some Sundays. Ends August 6, with postseason play carrying on through August 20. The commitment level expected by SYBS is 75%, which translates allows for a weeklong family vacation during the season. Players must be registered to try out for Bay State. A player's inablity to attend the try-out may be excused by the VP of Baseball 12 and Under provided it is arranged in advance.
Middlesex Baseball
Offers "travel" baseball on a more relaxed schedule. Middlesex games take place two weeknights per week, no weekends (except practice). Leagues are broken into 9/10 and 11/12 age groups. Ends around August 15, with no postseason play. The commitment level expected by SYBS is 75%, which allows for roughly a weeklong family vacation during the season. Players who wish to play Middlesex Baseball must register, but need not try out.
