AAA Cubs Complete Undefeated Season
The Lexington Wealth Management Cubs capped off an undefeated season (16-0-2) with a 3-0 victory in the AAA Championship game against the Ropes and Gray Phillies. The game started out as a pitcher’s duel between the Cubs’ Alex Tucci (2 IP, 4 K, 0 H) and the Phillies’ Will Skinner (4 IP, 3 K).
The Cubs struck first in the second inning when Teddy Carellas singled home Jared Martin, who had walked and moved to second on a single by Tucci. For the next two innings, the Phillies thwarted the Cubs bats with great infield defense, led by Daniel Holahan and Chris Chilton. The Cubs added insurance runs in the third and fourth frames. Tucci led off the third with a line-drive triple down the left field line and was plated by a Jimmy Crowther base hit. In the fourth, Henry Bailey legged from first to home on a double by KurtisWeber.
The Cubs’ Tyler Davidian (4 IP, 3H, 6K) took the hill in the third and slammed the door. The Phillies mounted late rallies when Cole Turrissini doubled to left field and Andrew Polcari singled to right to start the last two innings, but great defensive plays by Martin, Crowther, Carellas, Spence Leuba and Shawn Kachadourian prevented the runners from advancing, sealing the victory.
The Cubs had advanced to the Championship game with resounding playoff victories over the A’s 13-1 and the Mets 13-0. In both games, the opponents threw ace pitchers (Tomas Munson for the A’s and Jack Farnum for the Mets), who were each able to hold back the hard-hitting Cubs lineup for the first few innings. The Cubs bats eventually exploded in both games, highlighted by a Jack Ulwick’s two-run, ground-rule double and a tape-measure Weber homer. The pitching corps of Martin, Crowther, Davidian, Tucci, Weber, and Carellas limited their three playoff opponents to just 8 hits and 6 walks.
The Phillies started their Cinderella run to the championship game as the tourney’s 10th seed. After upsetting the Shanahan Real Estate Group Pirates 11-10, they knocked off the second-seeded PC Quick Help Cardinals 9-8, behind the complete game pitching of Trent Green, and the A. Scolaro Masonry Angels 3-2 behind the tactical pitching of Skinner and Will Baxter.
